Architect in focus: Frank Greenwald

I’ve long been captivated by traditional American architecture, particularly those faded shingled beauties that dominate places like the Hamptons, Nantucket, Martha’s Vineyard and Cape Cod. It’s a style of architecture that is uniquely American (particularly on the east coast) and rarely seen in many other parts of the world.

Which leads me to one of my favourite architects, Frank Greenwald, who does this traditional style of architecture better than anyone. Based in East Hampton, Frank has designed some of America’s most beautiful homes, including two homes for Ralph Lauren, as well as the much publicised East Hampton ‘Barn’ of celebrity chef, Ina Garten. This is when I first heard about Frank Greenwald and it’s fair to say, I have been a huge admirer of his work ever since. (I think I even wrote him a “fan email” once?!)

All of his homes are truly magnificent, but some of my favourite Frank Greenwald designed homes are below:

Ralph Lauren’s tropical hideaway in Jamaica (above and below)
Ina Garten’s stunning barn in East Hampton, where she films her popular tv show, Barefoot Contessa. The show was previously filmed inside her main residence, which is on the same property. That’s my idea of a beautiful studio!
This is one of my all time favourite homes (and my favourite of Frank’s designs) primarily because I love the Belgian inspired design, internally and externally, but also because it’s a more manageable size home….and slightly more attainable! It feels warm, homely and elegant, but also unpretentious.
I love the exterior cedar cladding (left natural so it ages to a silvery grey), the huge A-frame roof and exposed rafters, the eclectic Belgian and French farmhouse touches in the decor and furniture, the stunningly beautiful french doors with transom lights. I think you could safely say I am obsessed with this house!!
Below is the recently completed pool, and pool house, on the property. I could happily live in the pool house!
This magnificent and grand home below is in First Neck Lane, Southampton. It may sound boring, but I think there is something truly beautiful and fresh about an all white timber home.
Above and below is this striking home in Sagg Pond, East Hampton. I love the infinity edge pool and stone pool house especially.
This stately home below is in Georgica Road, East Hampton.
I love the neutral palette with a touch of marine blue. It keeps it fresh and adds contrast and colour to the expansive room.
How charming is the little pool cabana?!
This grand beauty is in Bridgehampton and it is quite a house! It had me at ‘topiary’.
Such a beautiful, welcoming entry. I am a total sucker for topiary in pots and think a collection of them, in different heights, all grouped together, is about as chic as it gets.

I hope you all have a wonderful week!
